F3 RACE 2: Bilinski blasts to maiden victory at Spa

Saturday, July 24 2021

Arden Motorsport's Roman Bilinski claimed his and Arden's first BRDC British F3 victory in race two at Spa-Francorchamps this afternoon (Saturday).

The Polish driver, in just his fifth British F3 race, started fourth on the grid, which was formed by each driver's second fastest lap times, but moved into the lead on lap two.

Zak O'Sullivan was second again for Carlin, while Christian Mansell passed pole-sitter Bart Horsten for third on the final lap.

Horsten was forced to settle for fourth while Hitech GP's Sebastian Alvarez claimed his best result so far with fifth.

Javier Sagrera was just half a second further back for Elite Motorsport, with teammate Tom Lebbon seventh. Reece Ushijima finished fifth on the road but was handed a five second time penalty for track limits violations and dropped to eighth on the final classification.

Fortec's Roberto Faria and Chris Dittmann Racing's Ayrton Simmons completed the race two top-10.

In an almost repeat of race one, Horsten and O'Sullivan went wheel to wheel again at La Source, and down the Kemmel Straight. Bilinksi had also made a good start and was challenging for the lead, moving past the Carlin duo and taking second by Les Combes despite being edged onto the grass.

Horsten led the first lap but Bilinski was already putting him under big pressure, attempting a move at the Bus Stop chicane, but not quite making it stick. That kept him behind Horsten though, and the Arden driver benefited from the tow through Eau Rouge to blast into the lead on the second lap on the way to Les Combes.

He had pulled out a lead of almost a second at the end of lap two, but Horsten kept him in check, and by lap five just a second covered the top three.

O'Sullivan moved past Horsten on lap six but was unable to make further ground on the leader. Horsten meanwhile came under pressure from Mansell, who had dropped to fifth on the first tour. Mansell made amends on lap four with a move on Ushijima at Les Combes, and then set about chasing down the other Hitech. The move came on the final lap as the Australian used the tow again to gain on his countryman, and sealing his second podium of the weekend at Les Combes.

The final race of the weekend, the reverse grid contest, will take place tomorrow morning at 10.50 local time, with Chris Dittmann Racing's Max Marzorati starting from pole.
