Brookes tops timings as Bennetts BSB returns to Oulton Park

Saturday, May 04 2019

2015 champion Josh Brookes topped the timings in both today's Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice sessions, stepping up the pace in the second to edge out Danny Buchan with an impressive lap time.

The day was characterised by blue skies and cool temperatures, but leader Brookes said the chilly conditions were more of an issue for the riders than the bikes.  "As track temperature gets hotter we tend to lose grip as a general rule, so the fact that it's sunny but cool is really the ideal conditions for getting good grip. So on that front everything's fine, it feels cold on your body so you're a little bit tense sometimes," he said.

Brookes set an impressive 1:34.321s time in the second session, beating the official lap record, and admitted big changes to the bike set-up had paid dividends.

"The second session this afternoon we made more changes, we went to a different link, different spring, different shock setting, quite big changes for what I would normally want to change during a session, quite a big set-up change, and it had its advantages," he said.

But it was a day of mixed fortune for other riders, with both Ben Currie and Fraser Rogers sidelined through injury. Currie crashed on the exit of Shell during this morning's first free practice, sustaining a fracture to his leg, while Rogers came off at Water Tower in the same session, fracturing his right arm.

The weekend's action continues with free practice and qualifying tomorrow, followed by race day on Bank Holiday Monday with two headline Bennetts BSB races plus a superb support programme.

There's plenty of off-track entertainment too with live music in Chequers marquee tomorrow evening (Saturday), and fans can meet the riders for photos and autographs at the free pit walk on Monday at 11.20am. Plus there's a funfair and adventure playground to keep the kids entertained.
