Rare F1 treat for race fans at Ford Power Live

Tuesday, October 10 2017

Motor racing fans are in for a rare treat when one of the most successful Formula 1 cars in history takes to the track at Ford Power Live, Snetterton race circuit's newest event on Sunday 22 October.

The Ford Cosworth DFV-powered McLaren M23 won two World Championships with Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt. The latter featured in the motion picture 'Rush', scenes from which were filmed at the Norfolk circuit.

The car running at Ford Power Live is the one driven by Jochen Mass in the 1977 F1 season. His best result was 2nd place in the Swedish Grand Prix.

The McLaren is certain to be the star attraction of the lunchtime F1 track demo on the 200 circuit, which was set to be led by the V8 Ford-powered Benetton B190 until its owner was forced to withdraw. F1 fans won't be disappointed with the replacement line-up though, which also includes a 1974 Lotus 76, a 1983 Osella FA1D, a replica F3000 Renault F1 and a 1990 Lola F3000 Mugen-Honda.

Also powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV-engine and liveried in the iconic JPS colours, the Lotus 76 was one of the most advanced designs of the era. It featured a bi-plane rear wing to increase rear downforce and stability and its electronic clutch was the precursor to the modern semi-automatic gearboxes seen on today's F1 cars.

The Osella FA1D was used by the Italian team Osella Squadra Corse in the 1983 Formula 1 season and ran briefly with a Ford Cosworth DFV engine, while the F3000 Renault is built on a Lola F3000 chassis and based on a Fernando Alonso era F1 car.

The Lola F3000 Mugen-Honda was driven to victory in the 1990 International Formula 3000 Championship by Erik Comas, who comfortably won the championship that year.

The F1 demo is just one of many on and off-track attractions at Ford Power Live. Visitors can browse the Ford car displays, including anniversary celebrations of the Ford Puma, Focus ST170, Mondeo ST220 and Escort RS Cosworth. Prizes will be awarded in two contests - the 'Show & Shine' and the Ford Concours for the most impressive car on show.

There will also be demos of MASCARs - NASCAR's diminutive cousins - the historic BRISCA F2 stock cars and the all-American muscle of Mustang, Shelby, Roush and Saleen. Ford enthusiasts can also grab some time of their own out on track with open pit lane track time on the 200 circuit.
