Brundle Sr and Jr go head-to-head at PalmerSport

Monday, June 23 2014

Father-and-son racers Martin and Alex Brundle went head-to-head at Bedford Autodrome recently in identical PalmerSport JP-LM SuperRide cars for a special Father's Day Sunday Times feature.

Sky Sports commentator and former F1 driver Martin, 55, was pitted against 23-year-old son Alex, who has established himself as a rising star of the World Endurance Championship. The feature, inspired by PalmerSport's 'Dads and Lads' experience days, was devised to find out whether Martin's experience of more than 150 Grands Prix would give him the edge over his son's youthful exuberance.

Brundle JPLMThe pair arrived at Bedford Autodrome shortly before Alex was due to take part in the Le Mans 24-Hour race, an event won by his father in 1990. Martin's CV also includes victory in the 1988 World Sportscar Championship for Jaguar, the manufacturer which provides the power unit for the JP-LM prototypes used for the contest.

Before setting timed laps in the JP-LMs, both drivers acclimatised to the circuit and cars by giving PalmerSport guests passenger rides around Bedford Autodrome. When it came to the all-important head-to-head, it was Alex who posted the fastest lap.

For former PalmerSport instructor Alex, the result came as no surprise: "It took a long time for Dad to be OK with me being faster than him," he told the Sunday Times. "Now we've grown past that and we are happier for each other if we deliver a great performance but, yeah, there's still a bit of needle there for sure."

"I wasn't expecting to beat Alex," Martin admitted. "I know - straight from the racing driver's book of excuses, page 7 - that he's about two stone lighter than me, which should make him quicker. The rest is fitness, desire and desperation to become a pro. So I don't think I did too badly for a 55-year-old. Alex has the edge on me and I'm comfortable with that."
