Olympian Hoy nearing motorsport debut after Bedford test

Wednesday, February 06 2013

Great Britain's most decorated Olympian Sir Chris Hoy continued his Radical SR1 Cup preparations at Bedford Autodrome last week with a successful shakedown test.

The 36-year-old Scot, who claimed his sixth Olympic cycling gold medal at London 2012, will swap his saddle for a Radical sportscar as he makes his competitive motorsport debut in the 2013 Radical SR1 Cup. Last week he made the trip to Bedford Autodrome to step up his transition from cycling to motorsport by getting behind the wheel of the Radical SR1.

Under the guidance of 1988 Le Mans winner and Radical test driver Andy Wallace, Hoy's lap times fell and confidence grew as he lapped throughout the day, initially on a damp Bedford West circuit but increasing his speed as the track dried right up to dusk.

Despite this being only his second run out in the car, the former BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner was delighted with his progress and is already looking forward to his race debut.

"I had a brilliant time in the SR1," said the six-time gold medallist. "The SR1 racecar feels really good and I'm starting to feel at home in it. Andy Wallace's guidance has been awesome; I can't wait to get the season started!"

The Radical SR1 Cup, run by MSVR, is an all new championship for 2013 which is open to drivers who have either never held a race licence before, or are still eligible to wear a novice cross on the rear of the car. The SR1 Cup will lead aspiring sportscar drivers through the process of getting on the grid, with a detailed programme of driver training and technical tuition. The championship will see drivers compete in eight races held at Brands Hatch, Snetterton, Cadwell Park and Oulton Park.

Hoy will make his racing debut in the Radical SR1 Cup when the championship kicks off at Brands Hatch on 1 June. For more information on the Radical SR1 Cup please visit www.msvracing.co.uk.
