F2 racer Tuscher beats F1 stars to Autosport Rookie of the Year

Monday, December 03 2012

FIA Formula Two Championship runner-up Matheo Tuscher has been named Rookie of the Year at the Autosport Awards held at London last night (Sunday).

The talented 15-year-old Swiss driver fought off competition from highly rated Formula One drivers Romain Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Verne to scoop the award, which was voted by readers of Autosport.com.

Tuscher turned heads in his debut F2 season by securing a pole position on his maiden outing at Silverstone GP in April. He soon became a force to be reckoned with by picking up podium finishes at Nurburgring, Spa and Brands Hatch. Tuscher then went on to record two impressive victories in the final six races at Paul Ricard and Monza helping him to second spot in the championship.

Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner presented him with his award and he now joins a list of illustrious previous winners which include F1 world champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Tuscher told Autosport.com: "When my manager called me and said I'd been nominated for an AUTOSPORT Award, I asked him 'What's an AUTOSPORT Award?'"

"I went to AUTOSPORT.com and saw the other nominees, F1 drivers, IndyCar and it was just incredible. My heart is going so fast right now. It's been an incredible season in F2 and we did a super job. Thanks to everyone that's supported me."
