Girl Power at Bedford Autodrome

Thursday, October 27 2011

PalmerSport is renowned as being the best corporate motorsport event in the world, and as such requires the finest instructors to deliver the perfect driving day.

On 14 October an all-female group led one of the activities for the first time - the Caterham event on the sinuous East circuit, fulfilling a long standing ambition for Group Chief Instructor Phil Ellis.

"I have been trying for 12 years to put together an all-girl team for one of the PalmerSport events, and on October 14 it finally happened with a group of seven girls instructing on a Caterham activity on the East circuit" Ellis lauded.

"Encouraging females into motorsport is always challenging, but hopefully the example set by our team at Bedford Autodrome will go some way to encouraging others to join in."

The group were led by Felicity Ralph (second from right in photo) with Sian Atkinson, Sarah Dryhurst, Abbie Eaton, Susie Marchment, Emma Selway and Maiken Rasmussen all assisting.

"I was super excited when Phil told me I was going to be in charge of the first all girl Caterham team, but determined not to let him down!" Felicity Ralph commented.

"We all worked really well together and the guests had a brilliant day, after they got over their shock!"

Of the team, several of the girls have racing experience. Eaton was Dunlop Sport Maxx Class B Champion in 2009 while Selway was a podium finisher in Formula Palmer Audi, and Rasmussen currently competes in the DTM supporting Volkswagen Scirocco Cup.

The Caterham experience forms part of the legendary PalmerSport event, which also includes the BMW M3 GTP, F1 style Formula Jaguar single seaters and the new Palmer Jaguar JPLM, based on Le Mans style sports prototypes.
